FTP - Uploading or Publishing to your web

Read file_manager first.

The parent directory is what you see when you open file manager or an FTP program. You will notice 5 directories already placed there by the Domain set-up program.

Open and Upload your files under the domain-www directory.

You may notice the www directory will duplicate the files you place in the domain-www directory. The www directory in user's parent directories is in fact not a directory. In actuality, it is a symbolic link, which points to the user's domain-www directory.

Whatever you do, do NOT DELETE directories from your parent directory. Read this.

If you use Microsoft® FrontPage® to Publish your web, it automatically uploads files into correct directories. Before you start, go to your Control Panel (yourdomain.com/menu) and click on FrontPage Extensions, then install.

Once loaded, it will take over your web. Be advised that some tools we provide may lack function with FrontPage installed. Notably, the protect directories function.

FrontPage is as simple as writing a word document and when your ready to go online, click one button to publish.

Publishing with Netscape Composer

To upload files with Netscape's Composer use the publish button. In the Location field type

ftp://yourdomain.com/www/

This will place the file into your webspace. Don't forget to include your username and password.

If you wish to place the file in a sub-directory you must first create that directory with the file manager. Then the location would be
ftp://yourdomain.com/www/subdirectory.

Uploaded files but still see white page

If our white "Welcome to domainname.com!" page, index.html, has not been replaced by another index page, then anyone going to domainname.com will still see the white page instead of some other home page.

This is the order in which the web server looks for a page to put up as the "home" page:

>Directory Index

  • default.htm
  • index.phtml
  • index.pht
  • index.cgi
  • index.shtml
  • index.html
  • welcome.cgi
  • welcome.html
  • index.htm

Just delete the index.hmtl file and anything after it in this list will then come up automatically. Notice that "home.html" is NOT on the list and so will not show up as your home page. You would need to rename it.
